Our favorite Hollywood stars made platinum blonde famous and women everywhere have been going blonde since lighteners were invented! If you've always wanted to go platinum, but weren't quite sure how, here's everything you need to know...
As a general rule, women with pale/cool/pinkish skin tones look best in platinum blonde hair. However, it just depends on how much contrast you desire between skin tone and hair color. Often, overly tanned skin is not right for platinum (and unless your skin is naturally this way, avoid tanning! Stay safe and wear SPF daily). Keep in mind, switching to a platinum shade means you'll most likely need to adjust your makeup, too. If you notice yourself wearing more makeup than before, you've
most likely gone too light with your blonde. Remember to keep your brows natural to balance your new hair color, and never lighten your brows to match.
HOW TO GO PLATINUM FOR THE FIRST TIME
If you have any previous hair color on your own hair (even if it's from a few years ago) and your hair is longer than chin length, then your best bet is to cut off your colored ends and start fresh before going platinum. On the other hand, if you've never colored your hair before, you'll get the best results if your hair is no darker than light brown. Any darker and your result will be more of a golden or yellow than a platinum.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED IF YOUR STARTING COLOR IS...
BLONDE: Nice'n Easy in Ultra Light Natural Blonde
RED: Nice'n Easy in Ultra Light Natural Blonde or Born Blonde
BRUNETTE: Born Blonde (PRO TIP: After lightening, apply a semi-permanent color to add tones back to your hair. If you like cool tones, use Natural Instincts Linen 8A. If you want a warmer blonde, use Natural Instincts in Sunflower 8G.)
STEP 1: Get your supplies ready: Old shirt and towel, 4 plastic clips and a plastic comb, preferably with a rat-tail for easier parting.
STEP 2: Part your hair into 4 quadrants and pin up with a plastic clip.
STEP 3: Mix your product according to the directions. This is very important to get the best result out of your product!
STEP 4: Grab a friend, especially if your hair is longer than shoulder length. She can be your eyes to make sure you fully saturate every strand of hair, especially in the back of your head.
STEP 5: Starting at the nape of your neck, divide a 1-inch section of hair and pin up the rest. Apply color starting approximately 1-inch away from the scalp and work lightener to the ends. Continue around your head.
STEP 6: You will start to see your hair lightening! Don't get nervous, it's supposed to turn from your brown through orange, gold, and finally to pale yellow! Once you see your hair get to the orange stage, repeat the application process, but this time, apply to your roots. Your roots will quickly catch up to the rest of your hair!
STEP 7: Once you've finished applying, set your timer. Depending on your natural starting color, it could take up to 60 minutes to get you to platinum. However, keep an eye on it and check every 10 minutes. You want to get it so your hair still has a hint of yellow (think inside of a banana yellow). As soon as you see that: rinse, shampoo and condition.
PRO TIP: It is very important that you do not let your hair get beyond the pale yellow point. White hair indicates damage and possible breakage. Be sure to mark down your process timing so you know how long to leave it on when it's time to touch up your roots in a month.
TIPS FOR MAINTAINING BLONDE HAIR:
Once you've gone platinum, maintaining your gorgeous look is actually pretty easy!
1 / Don't go more than 4-6 weeks in between applications. Now that your hair is lighter, your roots will be more noticeable.
2 / When you touch up your roots, avoid overlapping the color onto hair that has already been lightened. It can over-process hair which could result in breakage.
3 / Use minimal heat styling. Platinum hair tends to be porous and the most fragile when it comes to breakage.
4 / Brass Banisher: Apply purple shampoo to hair once per week. Leave in for 5 minutes to neutralize any yellow tones then rinse. Try: Shimmer Lights Shampoo by Clairol Professional.
5 / Always use a shampoo and conditioner for color-treated hair.
6 / Once a week, treat yourself to a DIY deep conditioning treatment. Use your remaining CC+ ColorSeal Conditioner once a week for extra moisture!
