Red, why do you toy with our emotions? At first you’re filled with fiery passion. But as the weeks go by, that red-hot shade seems to fade into a luke-warm version of itself (usually down the drain!). We even find ourselves not washing our hair for days at a time just to keep that beautiful ginger, crimson or copper shade around longer. After all, we’d do anything for love. So what’s a girl to do? Besides washing hair less and always using cool water, here are a few ways to keep your red shade as vibrant as the first day you set eyes on it.
1. USE RED SHAMPOO
Not just “color safe” shampoo and conditioner. Shampoos that deposit a hint of red color to your hair can be used once a week to preserve your shade in between colorings. It’s kind of like purple shampoo for blondes except red for redheads! Check with the ladies at your local beauty supply store.
2. SWITCH TO DEMI PERMANENT
Sounds counterintuitive, but the idea is if red color fades the fastest out of any hair color then more frequent color applications are required. Using a demi-permanent color every 4 to 6 weeks is gentler on hair and helps you maintain the vibrancy you want. Try Natural Instincts.
3. MAKE A CUP OF RED ROOIBOS TEA
In addition to a color gloss twice a month, try one of Mother Nature’s recipes: Once a week, soak 2 bags of red rooibos tea in 6oz. of water (beet and pomegranate juice work, too!). Using a spray bottle, spritz the mixture onto hair and leave-in for 30 minutes. Rinse. This will naturally enhance the red undertones in your hair and it’s safe to use as often as you want.
